"About ten years ago I ran across an article highlighting animals in contemporary artwork," says Sonheim. "There were some wonderful things going on, and it served as an inspiration for me these past years to just 'go for it' with regards to focusing on animals in my artwork."
When Sonheim sought out books on drawing contemporary, stylized animals, she found the book market to be nearly devoid of titles on the subject. So, she wrote one!
Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals: A Mixed Media Workshop, published October 1, offers creative exercises designed to teach the user to draw a variety of fun animals and creatures.
While rendering art for the book, Sonheim was drawn to the lyrics of Lenard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
"I know I listened to that song numerous times on Pandora while working," says Sonheim. "These lines from the last verse seemed to fit with my take on drawing and on life: I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you."
Sonheim is currently working on developing two new online classes that will go live in early 2013, as well as partnering with her photographer husband on a book project. Her love of contemporary illustration is certain to continue to inspire!
