| Who do you think helped propel 'Hunger Games' to stratospheric heights? |
Yes, you read that right... there are more public libraries than McDonald's in the U.S.- over 16.6K. Take that Big Mac!
(For the smarty-pants who are now asking how many McDonald restaurants there are in the U.S., there's a little over 12.8K. Satisfied?)
Point is, we're glad to hear that there's more access to brain candy than to McFlurries (though don't get me wrong you little fluffy white candy-infused cups of joy, we still appreciate you. But until research shows a direct connection between ice cream and students' high achievement scores, well, we're siding with the libraries.)
Chances are you've spent more time in a fast food line recently, though, than at your local library and if so, you're missing:
- a palooza of opportunity to hang out with some of the geekiest-cool people on the planet
- access to technology from free Wi-Fi to ebooks and BluRay movies
- the chance to expose your kiddos to the love of reading, research, and Manga comic books.
Schedule an after-school or weekend visit, sign up for some creative summer reading programs, connect with your local book club or writer's group, and so on... a.k.a. get your bum to the library and stop missing out on all the hoopla.

This has been a Comic Book Mom public library service announcement... you may now return to surfing YouTube.

Libraries here (in the UK) are closing at a worrying rate. I don't know how it compares to the number of McDonalds!
ReplyDeleteThat's very troubling! There's a lot of talk in the U.S. of this happening. I hope the tide turns and people begin to realize the great value of our libraries.
DeleteI love my public library!
ReplyDeleteI'm very happy to hear that there are more of them than McDonalds :)
Thank you for pointing me to that website!
Happy to share... you'll find lots of great resources there, enjoy!
DeleteStopping by from VB! I think the problem nowadays is technology. You can order a book online and send it directly to your kindle. You can even borrow library books from your Kindle device now.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely agree that eBooks are changing the landscape, but I think people also do not realize there's tons of technology at our public libraries, too- including, as you mentioned, ebook borrowing.
DeleteI dont know what I would do without our public library, I know everyone, they know me and my family by name, we are there at least twice a week, and in the summer months more. I love to get a book to read, I am not into the readong books online, I am old school and I am teaching my kiddies that also. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI think we are kindred spirits, Pamela :)
DeleteWOW!!! I know we have more McDonald's in our county than public libraries, unless you count school libraries. Very interesting!!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I live in a remote rural area, so the McD ratio to libraries is pretty equal, until you add in the school libraries.
DeleteI used to visit the library quite regularly. Now that I review so many books, I honestly don't have time to go to the library. Isn't that a shame?
ReplyDeleteI hear you Ruth! One thing I like to do is donate copies of the books I review to the local library. Their budgets are slim, so it's always appreciated. Just a thought to get you heading to the library :)
Deletewe frequent our library and love every minute in there!! great post!!! i wish we could check out more books than they allow. ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL that's always a problem for us, too. And we always want to check out more media (movies, cd's, etc.) than allowed, too. But maybe that's their trick to getting us back in the door more often?
DeleteLove this comparison! So, we are still reading...yay!
ReplyDeleteThanks Courtney! So far, so good... but we certainly need to maintain and encourage support of our fab libraries :)
