Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is the book we began our summer with, so it was a terrific surprise to learn that it would be the film that ends our summer vacation on a fabulous note. Tomorrow marks the first day back to school in Kentucky, today marked our first viewing of Sea of Monsters on the big screen. Sheer awesomeness!
To avoid publishing any spoilers, I'll simply say:
- the movie was everything I expected (based on impressions from the first film) and then some a.k.a. excellent!
- there are deviations from the book (which typically has to happen with a screen adaptation) but all of the highlights are intact. The essence of and the outcome remain intact, keeping it in line with the overarching Percy Jackson spunk and intrigue you expect.
- there are some righteous one-liners in the movie, capitalizing on the delightful sense of humor we've come to expect from Rick Riordan.
- my sons immediately requested to begin reading the third book in the series. Which truly sums up their high approval of the movie and book series... because normally I have to nag a little when it comes to getting them to commit to regular family reading time.
Synopsis: Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters continues the young demigod’s epic journey to fulfill his destiny. To save their world, Percy and his friends must find the fabled and powerfully magic Golden Fleece. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.
