Let's Rocket! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

I remember the debut of the Power Rangers in '93 well because my nephew was ga-ga over the program, collecting every Power Ranger figure he could, carrying a MMPR lunchbox to school, and dressing up as the Blue Ranger one Halloween.  It's a Power Ranger-luv'n phase he stayed in for years, but I never really caught more than a glimpse of the program here and there.

The iconic figures integrated into pop culture and spawned a new generation of MMPR fans... like my superhero sons who enjoy the Power Rangers Super Samurai series.

I wasn't sure what they would think of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Vol.1 on DVD, but wasn't too surprised to find they loved watching the original show.  Proof positive, I guess, that despite low-budget special effects, campy teen shows plots with cool, innovative heroes transcend the test of time when seen through the eyes of 9 and 11-year-olds.

What did surprise me was how much fun I had watching the first few episodes of the series.  A total blast from the past with the late 80's/early 90's slang and dress code. I can see why the kiddos love the series - with the strong appeal of story line (ordinary young people morphed into superheroes) and good-versus-evil with the occasional food fight action tossed in.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Vol.1 three DVD set features the first 30 original episodes. Fans of the series will dig adding over 10 hours of Power Ranger goodness to their collection and I have little doubt, a new generation of appreciation is in store for this collection.

Mark your calendars: It's morphin time August 21 when the DVD set debuts.
