Who is Frankenweenie? The Making of Man's Best Monster

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie Character
The teasers are beginning to come out for Frankenweenie (in fact, we have a super cool new clip for you below,) and the question on many people’s minds is “who is this Frankenweenie everyone seems to already know about?”

If you are not familiar with Tim Burton's earlier work, you may not know that in 1984, Burton produced a short Frankenweenie film featuring a young boy, Victor Frankenstein.  Victor goes to great lengths to resurrect his dog, Sparky, who was, sadly, hit by a car. The film parodies the classic "Frankenstein" film (1931) starring Boris Karloff.

The 1984 Frankenweenie was shelved, however, considered a bit too “dark” for young movie-goers and re-surfaced most famously as an extra on the “Nightmare Before Christmas” home versions (DVD, BluRay, etc.)

Twenty-eight years in the making from short film to full length feature, Frankenweenie will appear in theaters October 5, 2012 and it looks like the awakening of this stop-motion animated movie will be well worth the wait. Frankenweenie is the first 3D stop-motion to be rendered in black and white, giving old-style monster movie magic a very modern twist.

Fun Fact: The Frankenweenie voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), Martin Short (“Mars Attacks!”) and Martin Landau (“Ed Wood,” Sleepy Hollow”).

  1. I remember seeing some version of this with my kids one Halloween and it was probably more like 1992.
It is amazing what we think is too dark one year and okay the next isn't it? To me it was just a Halloween show so didn't think to much about it being dark as I compared it to the Frankenstein classic and more of a boys love for his dog.

    1. So true! The times have certainly changed quickly. I agree, I see it in the same vein that you do.
