Legend of the #BRAVE Will O' the Wisps

Merida Chasing a Will O The Wisp in Brave
Bob-a-longs, Merry Dancers, Will O’ the Wikes, Spunkies: the ignis fatuss (foolish fire) most commonly know as Will O’ the Wisp has led travelers astray since the Middle Ages. These beckoning lighted tricksters well-steeped in Western European folklore have even managed to make an appearance in the works of Shakespeare (Henry IV.)

Some believe the Will O’ the Wisps to be malevolent spirits or the guardians of treasures; some believe they are no more than marsh gas, methane that rises from swamps igniting a bluish glow. Most all agree they are know to entice men to stray off path, forever changing their intended destination, or perhaps, their destiny.

BRAVE has artfully included the Will O’ the Wisps into Merida’s journey delivering a magically enchanting experience for viewers by giving the wisps a personality, Disney Pixar-style.

“We made the wisps like actual little spirits,” says BRAVE director Mark Andrews. “They’re almost like Marley’s ghost in a way, because Marley’s ghost isn’t an evil spirit—even though he’s frightening, he’s trying to warn Ebenezer to change his ways. That’s what the wisps are doing. There’s a duality to them, because they’re either good or evil—they lead Merida into more and more trouble, but in the end, they’ve led her exactly where she needs to go.”

Would you be mesmerized and enticed to change your destiny? Would you follow the path of the Will O’ the Wisps?

BRAVE is currently appearing in theaters nation-wide (in fact, it’s the #1 movie at the box office this past weekend.) For more deets "Like" BRAVE on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/PixarBrave
