What happens when a creative Comic Book Mom comes across a comic book in distress? Well, some pretty kick-butt jewelry takes shape.
Sue Smith, owner of Comic Salvage takes distressed vintage comic books and recycles them into jewelry, cuff links and other geeky-neat stuff like paperweights.
Smith says, “My husband and I love going to flea markets. The idea was planted in my head there. I would see endless tables of comic books year after year. I love the look of vintage comic book, the illustrations are wonderful. I wanted to showcase what's great about these books into something you can wear.”
Comic Salvage’s best seller “Puzzle Links” are Smith’s favorite to create. Puzzle Links are cuff links that piece together like a puzzle to reveal a single image. Perfect gear for groomsmen or comic book fans looking to class up for a night on the town or comic book conventions (hey, whatever floats your comic book boat; these are definitely a cool accessory.)
And before you preservations get up in arms, Smith typically finds her comics at garage sales, flea markets, local comic shops or comic book conventions.
“I only use comics that are vintage, at least 20 years old,” says Smith. “My husband has been a comic book collector and illustrator since he was young. He's the first person I go too with my books to make sure they are truly distressed and have no real collector value, so no worries!”
Comic Salvage carries ready-made pieces and offers custom orders for a truly spectacular piece of artwork tailored to your personal passions.
