With dozens of great video games releasing over the next few months, console and PC gamers are going to spend hundreds of hours exploring, fighting, and triumphing over evil in front of their TV's and monitors this winter. But what about the portable gaming crowd? Well, they've got a lot to be excited about, too: here are six exciting new titles arriving on the 3DS, Vita, and/or iOS soon:
Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate
Set three months after the events of its console counterpart, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate sees numerous DC villians taking over a sector of Gotham's Blackgate prison, investigating the growing uprising – and more importantly, forging relationships with a young Captain Gordon and Catwoman. Releasing on both the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita (as two versions of the same title, not one being a port of the other in any way), Blackgate looks to further fill in Batman's intricate history, doing so in flashy, stealth-filled fashion for portable devices. For those buying the PC version through Green Man Gaming, Blackgate is a terrific alternative to take on the road to get your Batman fill on vacation or during everyday travel.
Infinity Blade III
Angry Birds might be the most popular iOS game franchise around, but Chair's Infinity Blade series have always pushed Apple's mobile hardware in ways other games can't even approach, technical marvels that are also fun as hell to play. Their latest, Infinity Blade III, was first shown off at Apple's iPhone 5S conference, displaying the exponentially increased graphical power of the new A7 processor in beautiful fashion. Like action-heavy games? Don't miss Infinity Blade III: it's available in the App Store for a mere $6.99.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Nintendo's already made “modern” versions of Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong: so why wouldn't they try it with A Link to the Past, one of the most loved video games of all-time? A Link Between Worlds isn't just some simplistic graphical update, though: it takes the world of Hyrule from its predecessor and introduces a wealth of new gameplay elements - not to mention some gorgeous, lush graphics that shine on the 3DS. To say we're excited for this long-awaited sequel is an understatement – we're keeping ourselves distracted playing Gamehouse casual games while we wait.
Mario Party: Island Tour
Packed with seven unique boards and 81 mini-games, the 13th game in the Mario Party series looks to be the biggest portable multiplayer game of 2013. Everyone loves some Mario-themed party fun, and Island Tour was designed from the ground up to be a travel-friendly version of the game, with numerous features geared towards freedom of play, whether at home for hours, or playing on the bus for a few minutes at a time. Either way, it's time to get those thumbs into shape for another round of multiplayer mayhem when it releases next month.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies
For those unfamiliar with the popular Japanese series, Phoenix Wright is an investigation adventure game where players study evidence and find contradictions in court testimonies to prove their client's innocence. Dual Destinies is the first full 3D game in the series, opening investigations at crime scenes in previously unimaginable ways (like rotating crime scenes, and using the all-new Mood Matrix to affect investigations). One of the most underrated series in the world, the newest Ace Attorney installment could prove to be the best yet.
Tearaway
From the creators of Little Big Planet comes a new, Vita-only adventure title, promising to utilize all of the device's unique features in interesting ways (like taking a picture with the camera to change the color of an animal in the world, or using the touch pad on the back to do various tasks). Add to it a colorful, vibrant graphical style and lots of papercraft art, and you've got the fall's most exciting, stylish little handheld adventure game. Not sure if it's for you? Rent it at Gamefly this fall and try before you buy.
